Why knees start hurting after 40: what Ayurveda says, and what helps

by Dr. Veda's Editorial Team, 30 Oct 2026

Short answer: Ayurveda sees age-related knee discomfort as vata naturally rising in the later decades of life and settling in the joints. Its first-line answers are warmth, daily oil massage, gentle movement and regular routine. Indian clinical trials of the classical herb shallaki (Boswellia serrata) in knee osteoarthritis give this traditional area some modern research support.

If your knees have started complaining on stairs or after sitting long, you are far from alone - it is one of the most common reasons Indians over 40 ask us about Ayurveda.

The Ayurvedic explanation

Ayurveda divides life into stages, and the later decades are considered the vata stage. Vata is described as dry, light, cold and mobile - and joints are where the texts say it settles. The classical descriptions match what people report: joints that click, stiffen in the morning, and protest in cold or damp weather. This is a traditional framework for daily habits, not a diagnosis.

What the texts recommend, and what still makes sense

When to see a doctor instead

Sudden swelling, locking, pain after a fall, pain with fever, or pain that wakes you at night. Oil and routine suit everyday stiffness; they are not a substitute for diagnosis.
